For instance, in the early 1930s, the London Underground had a problem; their standard map was complicated, dense, and challenging to read. There simply wasn’t enough space on a typical flyer to include all the details of London’s sprawling Tube. In response, Henry Charles Beck came up with a radical solution. He re-drew the map to include only the details necessary for travelers planning their route and spread elements apart to increase readability. Instead of a geographically-accurate diagram of the subway system, he created a simple, easy-to-understand layout with only straight and 45-degree angle lines. The result was so successful and user-friendly that it remains in use today.

• Substitute: Consider replacing the process or concept to see how it affects the outcome
• Combine: Explore how two or more elements could be combined to make a better whole
• Adapt: Look at how an existing concept or product can be adapted for a new context
• Modify: Think about changing certain aspects to enhance an original idea
• Put To Another Use: How can this idea be applied in a different situation?
• Eliminate: Consider how removing certain elements could simplify the design
• Rearrange: What would happen to the design if you changed the order or pattern of the elements?

These brainstorming techniques help artists and designers get out of creative ruts and fresh perspectives that align with their project goals.

• Adopt Minimalism: In certain situations, minimalist principles can help you adapt to budget or time constraints. Taking a less-is-more approach lets you create powerful designs that don’t overload the project. 
• Embrace Preparation: Creating detailed plans is another method that individuals and teams can use to innovate under constraints. For instance, marketing teams working under tight deadlines can create detailed storyboards to streamline content production.
